Naxi

With a population of 278,009, Naxi (also spelled Nakhi or Nahi) mainly live in concentrated communities in the naxi autonomous county of Lijiang River in the Yunnan province, and the rest are scattered throughout the Yanyuan, Yanbian and Muli counties in the Yunnan province. There are also a small number living in the Mangkang country in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The Naxi ethnic group has its own language which belong to the Yi branch of Zang Mian Austronesian of the Han Zang Phylum. Due to frequent economic and cultural exchanges with the Han people, most Naxi people can speak Chinese. The Naxi ethnic group created it own hieroglyphic “Dongba” script more than 1,000 years ago, which is still used occasionally by some Naxi people. Most Naxi people believe in the Dongba religion, which is a form of Shamanism.

Naxi people have created a brilliant civilization during its long history. The Dongba scripture, created in the 7 th century, is the only dieroglyph which is still used in the world today. The Dongba Scripture, a religious work written in pictographic script, is extremely important element in the study of Naxi literature, history, and religion.

Most Naxi people engage in agriculture and the chief crop include rice, maize, potatoes, wheat, cotton, and hemp.
